GLP-1 medications and your face: What you need to know
GLP-1 medications such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Ozempic (semaglutide) have become increasingly popular for their effectiveness in supporting weight loss. For many people, they can be life changing.
However, alongside the health benefits, some patients are noticing changes in their facial appearance – and are often unsure why their usual treatments, such as anti-wrinkle injections, are no longer giving them the same results.
As always, our role is to guide and advise you based on what is actually happening, rather than simply adding more treatment.
What happens to your face during weight loss?
When you lose weight, fat is reduced across the whole body – including the face.
The face contains natural fat pads which provide structure, support and a more youthful appearance. As these reduce, the face can begin to look more hollow, with increased visibility of lines, skin laxity and a more tired or aged appearance.
You may have heard the term “Ozempic face” – this simply refers to facial volume loss following weight reduction. It is not caused by the medication itself, but by the speed and extent of weight loss.
Why anti-wrinkle injections may not be working as well as before
Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing the muscles that cause expression lines, such as the frown lines (in between the brows) and crow’s feet (around the eye area).
What they don’t do is replace lost volume or improve skin laxity.
If the changes you are noticing are due to volume loss rather than muscle movement, anti-wrinkle injections alone may not achieve the same refreshed look you are used to.
This is why a tailored approach is so important.
What are the treatment options?
At Luxton Aesthetics, we always take a “less is more” approach and will only recommend treatment where it is truly needed.
If facial changes have occurred due to weight loss, we may suggest a combination of treatments to restore balance in a natural way:
● Dermal fillers can be used to replace lost volume in areas such as the cheeks or temples, helping to restore structure, creating a subtle lifting effect
● Skin boosters can improve hydration, skin quality and overall radiance
● Collagen-stimulating treatments (biostimulators) can encourage the body to rebuild its own support over time
● Medical-grade skincare can support skin health, firmness, and texture
Not every patient will need every treatment. In many cases, small, well-placed adjustments can make the biggest difference.
Our approach
We do not believe in over-treating or adding product unnecessarily.
If a treatment is not appropriate, we will always say so. Our priority is to ensure that any enhancements remain natural, balanced and in keeping with your individual features.
Weight loss journeys are personal, and aesthetic treatments should work alongside them – not against them.
The takeaway
If you feel your face has changed whilst using GLP-1 medications, or your medical aesthetic treatments are no longer giving you the same result, it is likely due to volume/structural loss rather than the treatment itself “not working”.
A consultation allows us to assess what is really needed and create a plan that supports you in a safe, subtle and effective way.
